Guyana’s male and female table tennis teams failed to advance from their groups at the Central American and Caribbean Games (CAC) in Colombia.
Grouped with Cuba, El Salvador and Barbados, the women’s team ended in third place with their only victory being over Barbados whom they defeated 3-0.
They, however, lost by the same margin to Cuba and El Salvador.
Against El Salvador, yesterday, Natalie Cummings lost to Estefania Ramirios 11-5, 11-8, 8-11, 11 – 5 while Olympian hopeful Chelsea Edghill took her match to five sets but lost 12-10, 12-10, 3-11, 4-11, 11-8 to Emme Arias.
The final defeat for the Guyanese came in the doubles category where Trenace Lowe and Edghill surrendered to Arias and Wang De Ying 9-11, 12-10, 11-8, 11 – 9.
The men’s team also failed to advance from their group placing third behind group winners Cuba and Colombia losing 0-3 to both teams.
Against Cuba, Shemar Britton lost 4-11, 11-7, 5-11, 5-11 to LIvan Martinez while Christopher Franklin lost at 5, 3 and 4 to Jorge Campos.
Cuba then wrapped up the tie when Martinez and Andy Pereira defeated Nigel Bryan and Franklin at 7, 6 and 5.
Against Colombia, Franklin lost 6-11, 11-8, 8-11 and 8-11 to Joaquin Villegas while Britton lost at 9, 7 and 9 to Julian Ramos.
The pair of Bryan and Franklin then lost 8-11, 9-11, 1-11 to Miguel Aguirre and Villegas.
The players will now vie for singles, doubles and mixed doubles honours.
