Guyana’s Trenace Lowe defeated Puerto Rico’s Daniely Rios on her way to topping her group as the individual women’s singles competition of the Central American and Caribbean Games (CAC) got underway Friday in Colombia.
Lowe dominated and topped her group with wins over Rios 13-11, 11-8, 11-7 and Jazel Griffith of Barbados 11-1, 11-1, 11-1.
Lowe will be joined in today’s round of 16 clash by Chelsea
Edghill finished second in her group after defeating Linda Partap of Trinidad and Tobago 11-3, 11-2, 11-9 but lost to Mabelyn Enriquez of Guatemala 11-8, 11-3, 7-11, 11-8.
Eliminated were Natalie Cummings and Priscilla Greaves.
Greaves in her encounter surrendered 9-11, 5-11, 5-11 to Gremlis Arvelo of Venezuela and 6-11, 2-11, 4-11 to Melanie Diaz of Puerto Rico while Cummings lost her two matches to Hidalynn Zapata of Guatemala 9-11, 5-11, 11-8, 10-11 and 6-11, 3-11, 4-11 to Adriana Diaz of Puerto Rico.
In the men’s category, Shemar Britton, Christopher Franklin and Nigel Bryan all qualified after finishing second respectively in their groups while Joel Alleyne was only Guyanese male to miss out on qualifying for the main draw.
Britton defeated Jose Urbina of Honduras 11-4, 11-7, 11-7 but lost to Brian Afanador of Puerto Rico 6-11, 10-12, 9-11.
He will play the Dominican Republic’s Emil Santos this morning.
Franklin was defeated by Cuban Andy Pereira 11-5, 11-4, 11-7 before working his way past Oscar Villalta of El Salvador 11-6, 11-8, 11-4 to earn his place in the round of 16.
He will play Cuba’s Jorge Campos today.
Bryan defeated Oliver Mendonca of El Salvador 11-5, 12-10, 7-11, 12-14 but lost to Emil Santos of the Dominican Republic 11-9, 2-11, 3-11, 7-11.
He is scheduled to play Livan Martinez today in his round of 16 encounter.
Alleyne lost both of his matches to Miguel Lara of Mexico 8-11, 8-11, 7-11 and 8-11, 8-11, 9-11 to Jorge Campos of Cuba to end his singles campaign.
