National Under-15 batsman, Mavindra Dindyal is the lone Guyanese in the West Indies U16 team to tour England in August.
Dindyal, who finished as the leading run getter in the Cricket West Indies Regional Under-15 tournament, stroked an impressive 98 in the final against eventual tournament winners, Barbados while sharing in partnerships worth 57 and 89 with Shamar Yearwood and Jonathon Rampersaud.
Dindyal has been a dominant force at the youth level since 2017 when he was earmarked as one for the future.
The 13-year-old was selected to represent Demerara in the Guyana Cricket Board U-15 tournament at the age of 12, but only managed to make it as a standby.
The right-handed batsman is also a crafty off spinner taking the most wickets in the RDC tournament
Dindyal, who plays his club cricket at the Gandhi Youth Organisation, came back with a vengeance the next year, earning himself the Most Valuable Player of the National Schools Championship and the Region Four Regional Democratic Council Schools Tournament.
The Diamond Secondary School student was born in Middlesex on the Essequibo Coast before moving to Demerara where he settled on the East Bank.
According to GCB Public Relations Officer, Andy Ramnarine, the board extended congratulations to the young man on his selection.
He noted that two others made it to the provisional 18-man squad but was later shortened to 14 with the two not making the cut.
Ramnarine said “the young man has been a special talent even from his early days when he began playing cricket at a tender age at the Rising Stars Sports Club in Essequibo.”
Dindyal said it was something special for him as he moves one step closer to realizing his dream of one day representing his nation at the senior level.
The Diamond/Grove Housing Scheme resident remembered how he began playing his strokes in the back of a canter truck with the guidance from his father ‘Teddy’ who can be found at every single match his son plays, usually being the most vocal spectator.
The young stroke maker will join the team in Barbados on August 5 before departing for England where the tournament will take place over a two week period.
Last year, Sachin Singh was the lone Guyanese in the squad that toured England.
