Guyana’s top wheelsmen will have their work cut out for them as they face a packed schedule in races organized by national cycling coach, Hassan Mohammed.
With the Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF) set to announce a five-man team to represent Guyana at the Caribbean Championships in the Dominican Republic and with 11 of the top senior riders qualifying for the event, they will want to make their presence felt while for some, it will be about staking their claim to be a part of the team.
The 11 in contention are Andrew Hicks, Christopher Griffith, Hamzah Eastman, Jamaul John, Paul DeNobrega, Curtis Dey, Alanzo Ambrose, Deeraj Garbarran, Romello Crawford, Silvio Innis and Briton John.
On Saturday, the riders will converge at the inner circuit of the National Park where they will meet for the 15th annual Seven Seas 11-stage programmed sponsored by Massy. With Raul Leal migrating, the door is open for one of the young talents to claim the top spot in the senior category and better his time of one hour, 17 minutes and 56 seconds. Nigel Duguid was crowned champion of the juveniles/juniors division in a time of 23:11 while Ian Jackson and Nigel Jacobs won the veterans Under-50 and mountain bike categories respectively.
On hand will be Nirvana Thakur, Products Specialist at the sponsor’s company who will witness the action and distribute prizes.
On Sunday, the riders will take to the West Bank of Demerara for the 14thannual Reagan Rodrigues Memorial 46-mile road race sponsored by Ricks and Sari Agro Industries. The wheelsmen will begin at the Demerara Harbor Bridge and travel to Bushy Park for the turning point before returning to the starting line for the finish.
Last year winners were Jamaul John (1:56:48:59) in the seniors category, Briton John (juniors), Ian Jackson (veterans) and Talim Shaw (mountain bike).
The Rodrigues family will be there to distribute prizes after the race. Rodrigues was a former champion motor racer and cyclist as well as a former president of the Guyana Cycling Federation.
