Businessman Lloyd Britton has partnered with the 8th of May organisation to host the Emancipation Football Cup set to start tonight.
The tournament, which will see 12 teams battling at the Beterverwagting (BV) Community Centre Ground for the top prize of $350,000, concludes on 3rd September.
Some of the East Coast villages slated to compete are Plaisance, Vryheid’s Lust, BV, Better Hope, Buxton, Golden Grove, Victoria and Ann’s Grove, along with a team representing the 8th of May organization.
According to Chairperson of the BV/Triumph 8th of May group, Latecia Stuart, the competition was long in the making, however by virtue of not having secured any sponsorship, a request was made to Britton, who immediately jumped on board, offering a significant investment.
“The support given by Mr Britton has set the ball rolling and we remain confident that a number of other persons and companies would step forward to play a part as we are certainly in need of support,” Stuart said. It was revealed that one of the primary goals of the competition is for community participation at all levels, thus forging inter-village relationships.
Each team will comprise 18 players, a coach and a manager and will be required to pay an entrance fee of $20,000.No player in the Guyana Football Federation Elite League can compete in the competition.
All the matches are scheduled to be played under floodlights at the BV Community Centre Ground and patrons will have to pay an admission fee of $500
