A superb five-wicket haul from off spinner Darius Andrews spurred Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) to a seven-wicket win over the Guyana National Industrial Corporation (GNIC) in a one sided Under-19 affair at the GCC ground, Bourda on Saturday.
The visitors won the toss and decided to capitalize on the good sunshine after a late start but were quickly skittled out for a dismal 72 in 14 overs while the hosts required 13 overs to get the job done.
After the match, the successful captain, Stephon Wilson, credited the bowling effort for the uniformed performance and the organisers for providing the regular games.
Wilson also expressed thanks to GNIC for accepting the invitation to come and play and commended the team for their sportsmanlike conduct and friendly bond fostered during the time spent together.
Quintyn Sampson struck in the first over by bowling Raymond Bandhu but Jeremiah Scott and Jeremiah Benjamin added 31 for the second wicket before Benjamin was dismissed by Ellian Whyte in the sixth over.
Scott continued his naturally aggressive batting but wickets continued tumbling at the other end as Andrews ripped through the middle order, trapping three of his victims leg before wicket.
With Scott losing partners, he played one shot too many and was unlucky to pick out the fielder at point to give Andrews his fifth wicket and end his innings of 46 which included three sixes and two fours.
Andrews finished with 5-8 while Aryan Persaud bagged 3-17 with Sampson and Whyte picking up one wicket apiece.
GNIC found success early with Yohance Blair removing Kennard Moonsammy who failed to score.
His opening partner Andsuegga Rodrigues followed in the next over.
However, Wilson and Dodi Oselmo added 35 runs for the third wicket and seemed to be leading GCC to an eighth wicket victory but a careless shot from O’Selmo resulted in his departure for 16, with one six.
Wilson played cautiously despite being dropped once for his unbeaten 22.
GNIC were particularly sloppy in their defence of the small total, giving away 20 extras.
