Cougars FC and Arsenal battled to a 1-1 stalemate when the Berbice leg of the Frank Watson Memorial U15 football championships continued on Thursday at the Scot’s School ground, New Amsterdam [NA].
It was a fitting and deserved end to a clash which, although bereft of clear cut opportunities, was evenly contested in front of a small gathering.
Cougars got off to the perfect start under fortuitous circumstances as defender Jerome King recorded an unfortunate own goal in the second minute.
In his attempt to clear the danger off the goal-line following a strike from an opposing player, King inadvertently hacked the ball into the back of the net.
It was a disappointing outcome for the centre-half and his team-mates. However, Jaren Fontanelle ensured that Arsenal secured a share of the spoils, equalizing in the 44th minute.
The wily Fontanelle made his presence felt, slotting his effort into the back of the net, after an initial strike from his team-mate following a right sided cross, was deflected into his onrushing path.
On Tuesday at the same venue, Hearts of Oak crushed Arsenal by a 4-1 score line.
Antwoine Wright bagged the hat-trick in the lopsided encounter. Wright found the back of the net in the 47th minute to commence his blitz.
He then sealed his double compliments of a 54th minute conversion. The hat-trick was then completed as Wright etched his name on the scorer’s sheet once more in the 60th minute.
An own goal in the 27th minute equalised the scoreline. The tournament is continues today with another doubleheader at the same venue.
