(Trinidad Guardian) Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley last night unreservedly apologised to the Hindu community for a skit performed at the People’s National Movement (PNM) family day, saying the skit was disrespectful to that religion but it was done out of ignorance and not malicious intent.

Former DHBC board member disputes legality of contract for new bridge study

With the legality of the award of the contract for a feasibility study and design for a new bridge across the mouth of the Demerara River now under scrutiny, a former member says it cannot be legally binding as the Demerara Harbour Bridge Corporation (DBHC) board never approved the project and the funding was not approved by Parliament, even as Public Infrastructure Minister David Patterson maintains that all decisions taken were above board.

Pollard leads from front as Stars end two-year wait for victory

A maiden T20 hundred from skipper Kieron Pollard at last propelled St Lucia Stars to a first Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) victory in 15 matches as the disappointment of 24 hours earlier was washed away in a dominant 38-run victory over Barbados Tridents.  The Stars had appeared certain to end their losing streak a day earlier against Trinbago Knight Riders, but failed to defend 85 in the last five overs to slide to a demoralizing five-wicket loss.  The schedule, though, presented the Stars with the chance to put things right immediately, and it was their captain who led by example, blasting his way to a six-laden 53-ball century – remarkably his first in T20s in his 384th innings – and sharing a sparkling 148-run partnership with Andre Fletcher (80 from 52) in a Hero CPL record score of 226/6.

NA United in upset win over Buxton in GFF Elite League

The struggling New Amsterdam [NA] United secured only their second win to date in the Guyana Football Federation [GFF] Elite League, upsetting Buxton United 2-1 on Friday at the National Track and Field Centre, Leonora.  Fresh off their 1-1 draw with giant Western Tigers, Buxton United secured the early lead, as Paul Kingston etched his name on the scorer’s sheet in the third minute.  However, recent recruit Kevin Cottoy equalised for the Berbicians, compliments of a 17th minute conversion.

It was an electrifying atmosphere in the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall last evening as Guyana’s new school table tennis team brushed aside their old school counterparts 5-2 in a number of exhibition matches.   The most exciting match of the exhibition affair happened to be the final match of the evening which saw Guyana’s former 14-time champion Sydney Christophe of the old school team, defeating the current men’s national champion Christopher Franklyn 2-0.

Guyana’s top female seed Priyanna Ramdhani continued to showcase her talent as she marched into the semifinals in the Under-19 women’s singles of the Caribbean International and Regional Junior and Senior Badminton Championships on Friday which is currently taking place in Paramaribo Suriname.  At the Ring Sports Center in Ringweg Noord, Ramdhani advanced via bye in the first round after seeded second in the draw and was greeted by Surinamese Sion Zeegelaar whom she disposed in just 20 minutes.  The 16-year-old protégé raced to 21-8 and 21-13 in no time to book her spot in the semifinals where she will face another Surinamese, Imani Mangroe.
