On the penultimate night of the third edition of the Caribbean Schoolboys and Juniors Tournament, the local pugilists shone the brightest among the young Regional stars and did not disappoint the patrons that showed up at the National Gymnasium.
Last night, Guyana’s Shaquille Wright got the better of St Lucia’s Sherwin Christopher while Emmanuel Pompey outclassed Jamaica’s Rhamone Chung.
Both Wright and Pompey stopped their opponents within the distance.
Wright snared the gold medal after the referee was forced to stop the lightweight (junior) bout after two minutes and 28 seconds of the first round.
After two standing eight counts and a knockdown, Wright earned the lopsided victory. Pompey, fighting in the blue corner, turned the tide on Chung in the second round after a see-saw first stanza of their welterweight contest.
At the start of the second round, Pompey unleashed a barrage of combinations to the face and body of his opponent who did not put up much resistance after seemingly running out of gas after the first round.
The referee soon stepped in and put an end to the fight. Guyana currently sits atop the table with two gold medals.
There were five other bouts on last night’s card.
The results are as follows:
Joshua Thambarran (26-30kg) won via unanimous verdict against Colin Williams
Trevor Sealey (30-34kg) defeated Alex Adams via second round stoppage (Referee Stopped Contest).
Dwayne Castello (36-40kg) won against in the first round (RSC).
Garveld Hyman (40-44kg) won via majority decision against Joel Anthony.
Abiola Jackman (Schoolgirls) won via RSC (round two) versus Julicia Rodney.
The third edition of the international championships which started on Friday, concludes tonight.
Fighters from Jamaica, St Lucia, Trinidad and the host are competing for bragging rights and medals.
