The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) yesterday averted a potentially major fire that threatened the Crown Mining Supplies office at Lot 8, North Road, Bourda, Georgetown.
At dusk yesterday, flames were spotted on the top floor of the building and persons in the vicinity quickly summoned the fire service.
Gregory Wickham, GFS Divisional Operations Officer, last night explained the firefighters were able to put out the fire in a timely fashion. He noted that they did not face any challenge and were supported by two fire tenders.
“As we mounted the building, we realised that the fire was at the top of the building, an area where you had a generator. There was some burning up there and it had combustible materials. However, we managed to put the fire out,” Wickham said, while noting that there was no severe damage.
Up to last evening, the origin of the fire was still unknown and Wickham explained that they would only be able to comment on the cause after an investigation has been completed.
Meanwhile, a daughter of the proprietor of the company said they closed their office at 5 pm yesterday. She explained when they left, there was nothing unusual. She added that minutes after returning home, she was informed of the fire and rushed back to the scene.
A security guard told this publication that he was alerted about the fire after persons on the Merriman Mall raised an alarm. “The chaps call me and showed me the fire went blazing and I start calling the owners and the security guard of Ring Bang called the fire service,” he explained.
The firefighters received praises from those present for the work they did.
