Defending champions, Guyana, suffered their first loss of the Cricket West Indies Regional Under-19 tournament, going down to Trinidad and Tobago by four wickets in the sixth round yesterday at Arnos Vale Playing Field while Jamaica registered a three-wicket win over Barbados and Windward Islands defeated Canada by 79 runs.
Guyana won the toss in the rain hit contest and opted to bat but fell for 116 all out in 37.5 overs.
Trinidad and Tobago replied with a commanding 118-6 in 27.5 overs to win the match
Guyana lost consistent opener, Sachin Singh with just two runs on the board while Joshua Persaud fell shortly after in the third over.
However, a third-wicket stand of 31 between Kevin Sinclair and Kevlon Anderson brought Guyana back into the contest before Sinclair departed for 14 due to a mix up between the pair.
Anderson was joined by his captain, Bhaskar Yadram, who scored a run-a-ball 10 before losing his wicket while rain interrupted the match with Guyana 52-4 after 10 overs.
Trinidad and Tobago continued to take regular wickets with left arm orthodox, Justyn Gangoo trapping Junior Sinclair leg before wicket and dragging Javed Karim out to be stumped in successive overs.
Anderson was losing partners regularly and tried to accelerate the scoring before being stumped off of Avinash Mohabirsingh for a 71-ball 42 inclusive of five boundaries. Ashmead Nedd was the only other batsman to put up some resistance with 11.
Rivaldo Ramlogan copped 3-27 while Gangoo picked up 2-7 from six overs.
In reply, Trinidad and Tobago got off to a good start with the openers putting on 29 before Yadram accounted for both openers.
The total was never going to be enough and despite two quick wickets from Joshua Jones, wicket-keeper/batsman Leonardo Julien and Mbeki Joseph stroked 24 and 20 runs respectively and with Joshua James playing his natural game, the twin island republic claimed victory.
James ended with an unbeaten 23 inclusive of a pair of boundaries and a maximum.
Yadram finished with 2-14 while Qumar Torrington and Jones closed with 2-21 and 2-35 respectively.
At Sion Hill, Jamaica romped to a three-wicket win over Barbados after Barbados won the toss and elected to bat, only to be bowled out for 77 in 34.3 overs with Jamaica replying with 80-7 in 23.4 overs.
Left arm spinner and skipper, Raewin Senior claimed 4-28 while Sanjay Williams took 2-15 for Jamaica. Barbados found themselves in a world of trouble at 8-36 until their number nine and 10 batsmen managed 16 each to give them a fighting total.
In the chase, Jamaica were equally troubled at 7-68 despite Kirk McKenzie scoring 28 at the top of the order but Senior returned with the bat to guide his side over the line with patient batting, consuming 40 balls in his knock worth 19.
Camarie Boyce, looking to bring his team to a remarkable win, claimed 4-25 with the other bowlers taking one wicket a piece.
At Park Hill Playing Field, West Indies under-19 opener, Kimani Melius stroked a belligerent century, the first by any batsman in this season, to allow Windward Islands to post 310-7 from their allotted overs.
Canada, in reply, recovered from an early collapse but still fell short, ending 231-9 with the overs running out.
Melius, opening the batting faced 58 balls for his 102 which saw him smashing six sixes and 13 fours.
The St. Lucian batsman shared in a 58-run opening partnership with Jahseon Alexander before adding 66 for the third wicket with Johnel Eugene.
This laid the foundation for Micah Joseph to come in and play without pressure as he clobbered seven sixes and a quartet of boundaries on his way to an 80-ball 90 and shared a 92-run stand with Lincoln Durand who stroked an unbeaten 33.
Randir Sandhu, Rishiv Joshi and Gurjot Gosal picked up two wickets each.
In reply, Kavian Naresh was a class above his team mates, scoring 71 from 74 balls, hitting six fours and a pair of sixes on his way. The other Canadian batsmen got starts but failed to carry on with Benjamin Calitz and Nicholas Manohar reaching 20 and 22 respectively.
But it was an unbroken 41-run last wicket stand between top scorer Joshi with 36 not out from 60 balls and Shlok Patel with 10 not out.
Shermill Lewis, Durand and Alexander picked up two wickets each.
