Guyana females qualify for Pan America games

Guyana’s female squash team will journey to Peru next summer for the 2019 Pan American Games after securing a compelling win over Brazil as curtains came down on the Pan American qualifies yesterday at the South Sound Squash club in the Cayman Islands.   The men’s team, however, endured an unsuccessful bid.

Warriors go top,Tridents stay bottom

(CPL) A quick-fire 96-run opening partnership set Guyana Amazon Warriors on their way to a comfortable Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) victory over Barbados Tridents at Kensington Oval Friday night.  The Warriors made light work of a 166-run target, easing to an eight-wicket victory inside 17 overs as they jumped back above Jamaica Tallawahs and Trinbago Knight Riders in what looks like a three-way fight for the top two spots in the Hero CPL table.  The Tridents find themselves firmly at the other end of the table after a fourth straight home defeat and likely needs to win all three of their remaining games to extend their season into the play-offs.  Luke Ronchi (67* off 40) and Chadwick Walton (43 off 34) ensured the Warriors were never in serious danger of falling short of the Tridents’ 165/7 with a flurry of early boundaries to break the back of the chase before Shimron Hetmyer and Cameron Delport continued the charge.  On a night when Barbados hailed Sir Garry Sobers to mark the 50th anniversary of his six sixes in an over, Ronchi briefly stirred hopes of the most fitting tribute of all when he deposited the first two balls of Jason Holder’s second over beyond the ropes.

Uniform

Uniform is the name of a village situated at the far end of Leguan Island. While there are other villages beyond it, Uniform is the last that is inhabited by people. Though the village is relatively big, not many people live there; it has been adversely affected by migration.

Buttler boosts England as they push lead towards 250

SOUTHAMPTON, England, (Reuters) – An enthralling fourth test between England and India remained intriguingly balanced at the end of yesterday’s third day as hosts edged to 260-8 and a lead of 233 on a wearing pitch that should continue to cause problems for the batsmen.

As someone who has chosen to live in Guyana again, I have speculated in this space about the various magnets operating on Guyanese who could live elsewhere but choose Guyana.

Alcohol and fitness

The Caribbean Premier League (CPL) dubbed the biggest party in sport is taking the Caribbean and the 592 by storm and some of the biggest alcoholic beverage companies in the region have partnered with the Amazon Warriors and other franchises.

Reviving history teaching

Yesterday marked the beginning of Indigenous Heritage Month. We will, of course, be treated to all the usual exhibitions and the like, but one cannot help but wish that the population as a whole, and not just the First Peoples, were exposed to the early history of this land.

Ministry of Education/GTU negotiators need to attend negotiation classes

Dear Editor, I have been following the stand-off between the Ministry of Education and the Guyana Teachers Union (GTU) and based upon what has been taking place, I believe, and I might be wrong, that there is a need for the majority of the negotiators to attend negotiation classes, and also for them to familiarize themselves with a published text entitled Negotiating 101 by Peter Sander.
