Team Guyana had an improved performance but recorded another tough loss, going down 36-48 against Mexico in their third and final game of the Americas 15s Challenge which concluded yesterday in Colombia.
After losing 71-7 to the host and eventual winners last Sunday, Guyana historically dropped the ball against Paraguay, suffering its largest defeat in team history, a 86-7 drubbing on Wednesday.
Captain, Ryan Gonslaves had vowed that his charges would do their best to end the tournament on a positive note.
While it was their best offensive and defensive showing yesterday judging from the scoreline, the ‘Green Machine’ known predominantly for their 7s success will return home winless from the grueling campaign albeit with the experience of playing higher ranked 15s teams.
According to reports, Cloyd Prowell recorded two tries. O’Neil Charles, Lance Adonis, Richard Staglon, Claudius Butts had one apiece.
Gonsalves and Daniel DeAbreu were the other players on the scoresheet for locals. The skipper chipped in with two conversions, while DeAbreu who earned his first international cap, converted one.
The score was 31-12 in favour of Mexico at the half. The loss meant that Guyana will have to play Cayman Islands at home in an eliminator to determine the second Rugby Americas North (RAN) team for 2019 Americas Rugby Challenge. Note: The Colombia/ Paraguay game yesterday ended 44-29.
