West Indies and Guyana Under-19 wicketkeeper Joshua Persaud ended his Cricket West Indies Regional under-19 tournament as the leading wicket keeper in the three-day format.
Despite their unsuccessful bid to retain the longer format title, Guyana’s cricketers showed promise with the young gloveman accounting for eight catches and three stumping behind the wicket.
Also, Persaud’s contribution was not limited to his fielding as he also showed his worth with the bat, being Guyana’s second highest run scorer with 136 runs and a best of 71, only behind Kevlon Anderson by three runs. Cephas Cooper of Barbados walked away with the most wickets in the format, accounting for 18 scalps with Guyana’s most impactful bowler being Kevin Umroa with 16 wickets including a 10-wicket haul.
Meanwhile in the one-day version where Guyana retained their title for the fifth consecutive year, Persaud was the leading run getter for the champions with 149 runs and a best of 80 not out.
Behind the stumps, Persaud ended with seven catches and one stumping while Trinidad and Tobago’s Leonardo Julien had 11 catches and four stumping.
Camarie Boyce of Barbados was the most successful bowler with 14 wickets with Guyana’s Joshua Jones trailing by just one.
Tournament Most Valuable Player, St. Lucia’s Kimani Melius stroked 257 runs including two half centuries and the tournament’s lone ton which saw him earning a spot in the West Indies B team that heads off to Canada. Windward Islands were deemed the most disciplined team in the three day competition while Leeward Islands won the award in the one-day version of the tournament.
