The Titans Table Tennis Club will serve off their third Table Tennis tournament for the year this weekend (September 8-9). The tournament, which is dubbed ‘Slammer Jammer’, will be held at the Marian Academy auditorium from 9:00am on both days.
President of the Club, Dwain Dick, who spoke to Stabroek Sport on the heels of the tournament, explained that the tournament gives coaches the opportunity to assess the growth of their players.
“Our tournaments are used to measure the development of our players, it gives the coaches an opportunity to show their work, also gives the players an opportunity to showcase their talent and keep them motivated and competitive,” Dick explained.
Some of the country’s top junior players are expected to display their talents, including those who recently returned home from participating in the Caribbean Cadet and Pre-cadet tournament.
Those youngsters will compete in the boys and girls Under 11,13,15,18 categories. There is also a ‘B’ Class open category.
According to Dick, a few ‘mouth-watering’ matches are on the cards which include the matchup between Kaysan Ninvalle and Jonathan Van Lange, who last week teamed up and captured a silver medal for Guyana in the Caribbean games in the boys under – 13 doubles.
This weekend, however, they will be on different sides of the table and should continue their exciting rivalry which will present a treat to watch.
The under 18 boys contest will present another hot toss up with Nickolas Romain, the 2018 Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) National under – 18 champion. He is expected to face stiff opposition from Miguel Wong and Jamal Nicholas.
Meanwhile, Navaeh Clarkston and Thuraia Thomas will also renew their rivalry in both the girls under 15 and 18 categories.
Patrons on Saturday will witness the under – nine and 11 finals with Jasmine Billingy and Malachi Moore, the hot favourites to take top honours in the under – 9 category while Colin Wong and Dhanesh Persaud are on the cards to trade serves in the boys under – 11 final where trophies and medals will be handed out to the winners.
A registration fee of $300 will be required to enter the junior categories, while $500 will be needed to compete in the ‘B’ Class open.
