Residents of North Sophia last evening severely injured a man who allegedly raped a six- year-old girl.
The man is currently at the Georgetown Public Hospital receiving medical attention under police guard.
At the hospital also, the victim was receiving medical attention. The incident occurred sometime between 6.30 and 7 pm.
A relative told Stabroek News that the child was returning home when the man called her to his house. As the girl approached, the accused pulled her into the house and locked the door, the cousin recalled.
She added that a woman in the community observed what had transpired and went over to the house and called out to him but he refused to open the door.
By this time, other residents in the community learnt of what was happening and showed up at the man’s house. The residents managed to rescue the girl and dragged the man out of the house to the street where he was beaten.
The police turned up and the man was taken to the hospital.
