One hundred and fifty youths from across the country are now better prepared for jobs after a readiness summer camp.

Dubbed Employment Attack 102, the camp was a collaboration of  Specialists in Sustained Youth Development and Research Inc (SSYDR) and ExxonMobil Guyana.

A press release yesterday from SSYDR and ExxonMobil said that the two-month summer camp targeted over 150 youth from secondary schools within Regions 3, 4, 5, 6, and 10. The release said that 153 youths in total were recruited and 150 completed the engagement. Employment Attack 102’s focus was working with youth from various secondary schools. The Camp comprised two components:

1) Work Ready Training – Youth were trained in a seven-module work ready curriculum over a one-month period. The seven modules were Personal Development, Interpersonal Communication, Work Habits and Conduct, Leadership and Teamwork, Safety and Health at Work, Rights and Responsibilities of Workers and Employers and Financial Fitness.

2) Coaching towards livelihood opportunities – under this aspect, coaches worked with youth using the asset based approach. Each youth, along with their coach, developed an ‘Individual livelihood plan’. Here, youths had the opportunity of deciding on their short and long term goals and working out how they were going to attain those goals.

The release said that the programme is  aimed at providing youth with the right attitudes to work so as to give them the opportunity to find and keep jobs.

This is the second year that ExxonMobil Guyana has worked with SSYDR. This contribution of $12 million underlines ExxonMobil Guyana’s commitment to the economic development of youth and partnering with Guyana, the release said.

SSYDR Inc. says it has as its vision, inspired youth transforming themselves, their communities, and their nation; and has a mission to promote youth’s access to resources, opportunities, and ongoing support for lifelong learning with the aim of reducing  violence, crime and poverty. The release said that youth in Guyana continue to represent the majority in the unemployment category. The release added that “Employment Attack

102” was conceptualized as a programme aimed to reduce youth unemployment and poverty by giving the candidates the essential skills and training needed to compete for jobs and hold them.
