Beharry Group of Companies Limited has once again partnered with the Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) to sponsor the Guyana Sevens Rugby team, Green Machine on their trip to the Rugby Americas North (RAN) Championships in Barbados this weekend.
At a simple but significant ceremony at the company’s Charlotte Street location, President of GRFU Peter Green, said Beharry has annually sponsored the male and female teams, having played a crucial role in the development of the sport.
Green noted that this year it was a delight to have the company help ease the strain on the GRFU to find expenditure of 7-15 million dollars for competitions.
“Every dollar counts and Beharry plays a role in developing players,” said Green.
Brand Manager of the sponsors, Monique Tiwari, said the company is proud to be associated with the team and the company is dedicated to developing and nurturing talent by giving back. She then wished them well in the tournament.
The GFRU President made it clear that the team they are sending is a mixture of veterans and exciting young players from which he expects a better performance than they gave in Mexico. He pointed out the players will not have to deal with the high altitude as they did in Mexico.
While the altitude may not be a problem, Coach of the unit Sherlock Sam stated that they are working with the circumstances afforded to them which works out to two days of four or five sessions.
He added that it would have been ideal if the team could had ventured to Barbados earlier and have some sessions.
Sam admitted that this would also benefit him since four regional players will be included in the team and he has not seen them first hand but has had good reports on them.
He also pointed out that the team selection was based on seasoned players since they have been under the microscope for the past two years with Jamaica becoming a point of worry.
The team is set to depart tomorrow but will be without the services of Godfrey Brooms and Selwyn Henry who, according to Sam, are nursing injuries.
Captain of the side, Dwayne Schroeder said that the preparation has begun at home and the mindset heading into the tournament is for a revenge victory.
He added that not only will they set themselves the task of beating Jamaica but anyone who comes in their way.
He acknowledged that it will be a tough challenge but said that the team was prepared to go the distance and revert to some of the old habits which were the building blocks of their dominance.
It was revealed at the event by Manager of the unit, Peter Campain that indeed the team will be departing on two separate flights with him, along with the physio and one other member heading ahead on Liat while the team will travel with Caribbean Airlines Limited.
Both parties expressed their confidence in the team excelling having tasted victory before while setting their aim not only to win the title but looking at the Pan American Championships in Peru 2019 and the Hong Kong 7s.
Since 2004, Guyana has been the most successful team, winning six times with United States of America and Canada winning it three times each.
Jamaica are the defending champions.
