An autopsy conducted on Wednesday on the body of Stonie Henry, the rape accused who reportedly ingested rat poison on Tuesday while in police custody, could not determine his cause of death.
This information was provided by a police source, who also related that as a result, government pathologist Dr Nehaul Singh has since ordered that tissue from several of Henry’s organs be sent for toxicology analysis.
The police had confirmed that Henry, 47, of Lot 539 Mocha Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, died at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) on Tuesday morning, hours after he ingested the poison at the East Ruimveldt Outpost.
He succumbed while receiving medical attention.
Stabroek News was previously informed that around 6.15 am Tuesday, Henry, who was arrested on Monday for allegedly raping a 16-year-old girl of Mocha Housing Scheme in May, was detained at the East Ruimveldt lock-ups when ranks on duty noticed him vomiting.
Henry reportedly told the ranks that he was feeling unwell and as a result he was transported to the GPH, where he died around 8am.
The police indicated that investigations revealed Henry told fellow prisoners that he wanted to die. They also suggested that he had ingested a carbon tablet.
After he began to vomit, they alerted the police on duty.
Crime Scene Unit ranks, the police had added, found a small plastic pack within the lock-ups and it was photographed and bagged as evidence to be analysed.
Additionally, Henry’s widow, in an interview with the police had said that he suffered from depression and anxiety and was a patient of Dr. Bhiro Harry of the Psychiatric Department at the GPH.
A letter was obtained from Dr Harry supporting her claim.
The ranks on duty were questioned. It remains unclear how Henry might have obtained the poison.
