St Cuthbert’s Mission will represent Region 4 at the 2018 Indigenous Heritage Games after its team defeated Swan 2-1 yesterday in the Region 4 football playoffs at the St Cuthbert’s ground.
In what was a rematch of the earlier group clash which ended 4-2 in favour of Swan FC, the home side broke the deadlock in the fifth minute, uncorking a powerful long-range strike which stunned the visiting spectators.
It went from bad to worse for the visitors as talisman Zack Perreira doubled St Cuthbert’s advantage compliments of a 15th minute conversion.
Swan eventually reduced the deficit in the 23rd minute, compliments of a Joseph Williams strike. However, the home side held firm to seal the important victory and the opportunity to represent the zone at the Heritage Games championship.
St Cuthbert’s captain Duran Adrian during a post-match comment said, “We recognised that we had to regroup as we came out to win all of our matches and unfortunately for us, we lost the first but rebounded in the second and last match which was the most important ones. We are confident of doing well and we are all elated that we have not disappointed the people of our community.”
According to Adrian, “This is our first time representing the region at the national finals and we are anxious to have earned this opportunity and would like to assure our fans that we will deliver.”
Meanwhile, Swan coach Andre Gonsalves said, “We had a game plan and while I don’t want to sound as though I am hitting the guys very hard, the reality is that we didn’t stick to the plan and therefore lost a game which had we played according to plans, we may have won.”
“We have a core of players who with the right training, discipline and determination will go on to greater things because they are determined and confident and that is the brightest part of everything,” he added.
