A Wismar man is now a remanded prisoner after being charged with causing the death of a labourer, whom he allegedly beat.
It is alleged that Travis Hazel, 32, called ‘Fifty,’ of Silver City Wismar, Linden, inflicted the injuries on Leroy Barron on September 15th, at Linden, thereby causing his death.
Hazel was not required to enter a plea to the indictable charge.
The prosecutor told Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in Georgetown that the police’s file for the matter is incomplete. As a result, the Chief Magistrate remanded Hazel to prison and adjourned the matter until October 8th, when it will be called at the Linden Magistrate’s Court.
The police had said that their initial investigations revealed that Barron, who was known to do odd jobs in and around the Mackenzie Market, had an argument with Hazel. It is alleged that Hazel armed himself with a piece of wood and gave Barron a severe beating, after which he fled the scene. Barron was picked up and rushed to the Linden Hospital Complex, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Hazel turned himself over to police two days later.
An autopsy performed on Barron’s remains revealed that he died as a result of a brain haemorrhage due to blunt trauma to the head.
