A father of two died yesterday after he collided with a truck while riding his motorcycle along the Betsy Ground Village, East Canje, Berbice Public Road.
The accident, which occurred around 12.30 pm, claimed the life of Rajendranauth Harold Singh, 52, of Lot 28 Reliance Abandon, East Canje, Berbice, who had been returning home from work at the time.
The Rose Hall Estate superintendent was rushed to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment.
According to eyewitnesses, Singh collided with a canter, which was being reversed out of a yard along the Betsy Ground Public Road.The police, in a press release issued yesterday, stated that the driver of the motor canter, GWW 1831, was reversing west out of his yard towards the public road when Singh, who was proceeding north on his motorcycle, CF 1651, collided with it.
Residents told Stabroek News that as a result of the collision, Singh was pitched on the opposite side of the road. One villager said, “The man did coming and same time the canter reverse out. Me only see the man pitch and fall there.” He added, “Me thought that man get minor injuries, some bruises, me na expect fa hear he dead. Imagine how hard knock he mussy get.”
Up to press time last evening, the driver of the canter remained in custody at the Reliance Police Station.
Singh, a father of two, was laid off after the closure of the Rose Hall Estate. However, he was later rehired by the Special Purpose Unit currently managing some of GuySuCo’s assets.
At his home yesterday afternoon, Singh’s relatives, neighbours, friends and colleagues gathered in a large number to offer their condolences to his family. He was described as a hardworking and jovial man.
