Fruta Conquerors signed off their successful 2017/2018 Guyana Football Federation [GFF] Elite League season on a positive note, edging fierce rival Western Tigers 1-0 on Friday at the Georgetown Football Club [GFC] ground, Bourda.
In what was the final match of the season, the newly crowned champions, who hail from the Tucville Community, relegated the West Ruimveldt giant to only their second loss of the tournament, compliments of a Ryan Hackett 11th minute strike.
Hackett netted the fixture’s only conversion in front of a small crowd, uncorking a left-foot, free kick, which was spilt by the opposing custodian into the back of the net.
Western Tigers were presented with several opportunities to level the contest, with their best chance occurring in the 27th minute from the penalty spot.
Tasked with taking the resulting spot-kick following an infraction, Daniel Wilson was denied from the distance by custodian Akel Clarke.
With the win, Fruta Conquerors finished on 45 points. They are expected to receive $5,000,000 for finishing in the top spot.
On the other hand, Western Tigers, the leader entering the event’s second round, dropped into the fourth position on 38 points. They are slated to receive $500,000.
Meanwhile, Den Amstel crushed Milerock 3-0 to secure the third position. Following a scoreless first half, Junior Gordon, Delon Lanferman and Kester Jacobs scored in the 49th, 75th and 86th minute respectively.
Due to the outcome, Den Amstel ended on 39 points and secured the third position, worth $1,000,000. Milerock remained on 15 points and finished in seventh place.
Dethroned champions, the Guyana Defence Force [GDF] will pocket $2,500,000 for clinching the runner-up position.
