A 71-year-old security guard died yesterday morning, moments after he was struck down by a motor car while crossing the Anna Catherina Public Road, West Coast Demerara.
Dead is Realino Santiago of Lot 1 Cornelia Ida Public Road, WCD.
The accident occurred around 8.45 am yesterday after which Santiago was rushed to the Leonora Cottage Hospital. He succumbed whilst receiving medical treatment.
The driver, a 21-year-old resident of Anna Catherina is presently in custody assisting with investigations.
He passed a breathalyzer test, the police said.
Enquiries, the police said, revealed that motor car PVV 982 was proceeding east along the northern carriageway of the public road when Santiago who was reportedly crossing the road from south to north was struck down.
The accident was captured on surveillance footage from a nearby premises which was circulated on Facebook yesterday.
In the short video seen by this newspaper, Santiago was seen running across the road at which point the driver of the motorcar noticed him and attempted to swerve. However, Santiago was still struck down.
Santiago’s body is presently at the Ezekiel Funeral Home awaiting a post-mortem examination.
