At the annual Heritage Games which concluded on Sunday night at Everest Cricket Club, Laluni dethroned Mahdia to be crowned the new male cricket champions while Guyana Rush Saints also dethroned Port Kaituma in football to bring a fitting climax to the three-day event.
In football action, the male event saw Guyana Rush Saints winning 1-0 against former champions Port Kaituma while Paurima played to a 3-3 stalemate in full time against Gladiators Football Club but eventually survived a thrilling penalty scare to win 4-2.
In the male cricket final, Laluni batted first, posting 29-5 from their five overs. The overs were reduced due to time. Aviaan Mohabir top scored with 10. In reply, Mahdia seemed to be strolling to their next title, needing 15 runs from 15 balls but a string of wickets halted their progress. Ryan Khedu’s lone over turned the game upside down. He bagged 3-3 while Wayne Larose took 2-4 in a winning effort.
Earlier, Madhia advanced to the final by defeating Port Kaituma by 45 runs. Mahdia batted first, notching up 114-3 from their 10 overs with Andrew Gibson smashing an unbeaten 50 and Rayon Adams contributing 40 not out. The pair hammered five sixes and two fours each.
Laluni marched into the final with a 72-run win over St. Cuthbert’s Mission. Laluni batted first, scoring 135-1 with Shack Wong blasting 65 runs with nine sixes while Mohabir and Daniel Francis stroked 31 and 25 respectively. In the chase, St. Cuthbert’s Mission was restricted to 64-5 with Sunil Sarju taking three wickets and Troy Domingo two.
In the female cricket final, St. Cuthbert’s Mission retained their title with a seven-wicket win over Kartaboo. Kartaboo batted first, posting 90-2 from their eight overs with Tishanna Andrews hitting four boundaries and two sixes for her top score of 36. Support came from Marcy Jules who also hit two sixes in her innings of 22.
In reply, St. Cuthbert’s Mission raced to the target of 91 with player of the final, Melanie Dundas, hitting five sixes and three fours during her innings of 45 while Christia Ferreira stroked 30 to see their team win after joining forces with only one run on the board and two wickets down.
In male volleyball, Mabaruma got the better of Bartica courtesy of Vance Harding who was named Most Valuable Player while Moruca defeated St, Cuthbert’s Mission with Annalisa Vincente being the Most Valuable Player.
Region One accumulated the most points to win the swimming segment at the National Aquatic Center, Liliendaal.
