Indira Outar, the woman who was charged with procuring five persons to murder a Tain mother in February, last year, at her home, was cleared by a court yesterday, one day after one of the women accused of carrying out the killing was also freed.
Magistrate Charlyn Artiga has, however, found that a prima facie case was made out against four of the persons charged with the murder and they are to lead their defences next month.
Outar, 44, of Lot 8, Block 4, Tain Settlement, Corentyne, yesterday walked out of the Whim Magistrate’s Court a free woman after Magistrate Artiga discharged the case against her.
The businesswoman, who operated a sawmill in Edinburgh Village, East Bank Berbice, was charged in late February last year with procuring five persons to murder Leilawatie Mohamed, also known as ‘Aunty Leila,’ 45, a domestic worker of Lot 149, Sixth Street, Tain Settlement, Corentyne on February 7th, 2017.
However, the magistrate yesterday reportedly ruled that the prosecution failed to prove that the woman had any meeting with the five accused before the murder and that she had issued payments to them. The magistrate also ruled that there was no evidence to prove that the woman was at the scene during the crime.
Outar was represented by attorney Mursaline Bacchus, while the case was prosecuted by Police Prosecutor Phillip Sheriff.
Meanwhile, Shabiki Alert Thompson, who was charged with the Tain woman’s murder, also walked out of the court a free woman on Monday after Magistrate Artiga discharged her as well.
Thompson, who was represented by Legal Aid attorney Sasha Roberts, was charged jointly with Oliver Permaul, 36, a barber, of Lot 100 Tain Settlement, his wife Nazima Permaul, 42, who operated a business in Rose Hall Town, Corentyne, Andre James, also known as ‘Andy’, 26, a tattoo artist of Lot 46 ‘A’ George Street, Rose Hall Town, and Rohan Johnson, also known as ‘Jamakie’, 38, a Jamaican national and a carpenter of Lot 107 Second Street, Rose Hall Town.
After ruling that a prima facie case was made out against Thompson’s four co-accused, the magistrate set October 15th for them to each lead their defence.
On February 7th, 2017, two men, clad in black clothes, invaded Mohamed’s home after kicking down the front door.
The men demanded cash from Mohamed and when she said she did not have any money to give, without hesitation the gunman placed the gun to her chin and shot her at close range, killing her instantly. A subsequent investigation by police determined that Mohamed’s murder was not a robbery but a planned “hit.”
