A Guyhoc Park resident was yesterday remanded to prison after he was charged with the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.
Charged in the courtroom of Senior Magistrate Fabayo Azore was Linton Trotman, 24, a miner of Lot 28 Guyhoc Park.
The first charge against the accused stated that he, on September 24, at Sussex Street, had a 9 mm pistol in his possession without being a licensed firearm holder.
It was further alleged that the accused, on the said day, was also in possession of 12 live rounds of 9mm ammunition, without being a licensed firearm holder.
Trotman denied both allegations.
Police Prosecutor Worrel Thornhill then objected to bail being granted, citing the nature and gravity of the charge.
According to the facts, on the day in question, at about 03:19 hrs, police, acting on information received, went to City Vybes Club, on Sussex and Hogg streets, Albouystown, where they saw the defendant dropping the firearm after seeing the police patrol. The accused was arrested and the gun retrieved. The defendant admitted to collecting the gun from his cousin.
Attorney Clyde Forde, who represented the accused, told the court a different story. According to the attorney, on the night in question, his client, along with others, were standing outside the club when someone upstairs of the said building threw the firearm to the ground. He noted that this can be supported by an officer and a soldier who were present when the weapon was thrown. Forde added that his client was, however, arrested and taken into custody.
Having heard from both prosecutor and attorney, the Magistrate remanded the accused to prison and adjourned the matter to October 24.
