Essequibo handed defending champions Georgetown a humiliating 98-run defeat to capture the 2018 Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) one – day franchise league at the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC), yesterday with a round to spare.
The victory was sweet revenge for Essequibo who lost the 2107 final and it was orchestrated by exceptional individual spells of left-arm spin bowling from spin-twins Anthony Adams and Ricardo Adams.
The duo shared eight wickets between them as they routed Georgetown for 55 in pursuit of 153 for victory.
The day, however, began with Essequibo being sent in after they lost the toss. They were then dismissed for 152 in 43. 4 overs.
Their innings didn’t get off to the desired start as they were reduced to 66 for 5 before Ricardo Adams and skipper Anthony Adams added 40 after which the latter was dismissed caught in the covers off leg-spinner Steven Sankar for 18.
Seamer Qumar Torrington continued his impressive run and accounted for the wicket of Parmesh Parsotam (10) while Christopher Barnwell dismissed Kevin Boodie (10).
Jamaican Ramaal Lewis, who has elevated his credentials as an off-spinner then dismissed Kemol Savory (19), Ronsford Beaton (10) and Chetram Persaud (0).
However, Ricardo Adams, who had bided his time, began to open his arms and swatted Barnwell for a few boundaries before he played one shot too many and was dismissed by the same bowler for 37 in a knock which included four fours.
Only Mark Williams, 23 not – out, added any lower order resistance as Steven Sankar (3-12) accounted for the lower order in support of Lewis’ (3-24) earlier efforts.
Barnwell ended with 2-31. Georgetown, in response, stumbled to 8-3 with Anthony Adams accounting for all three wickets to fall.
Those wickets brought the inform pair of Leon Johnson and Christopher Barnwell together.
The defending champions, however, slipped into further disarray when Ricardo Adams snuck a delivery past Johnson’s (6) defence to leave the score on 22-4.
Twenty runs later, the fifth wicket fell when national under – 19 seamer Joshua Jones removed Barnwell (21) to send their fans into jubilation.
Ricardo Adams then pulled a hat trick out of the bag getting rid of Sankar (2), Ashmead Nedd (0) and Torrington (0) to send Georgetown capitulating to defeat.
They were eventually bundled out for 55 in 24.1 overs.
Ricardo Adams, who had an excellent day at the office, ended with 4-16 from 10 overs while Anthony Adams (4-26) was responsible for Georgetown’s early destruction.
