A Cuban national was yesterday fined and ordered deported for illegally entering Guyana.
Anna Ramirez pleaded guilty to two charges, which were read to her by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in Georgetown.
Ramirez, 33, heard that on March 29th, 2018, she entered Guyana and crossed the border to Brazil without referring herself to an Immigration Officer. On September 25th, she re-entered Guyana illegally and again failed to present herself to the nearest Immigration Officer.
According to the Police Prosecutor, on her way to Georgetown, Ramirez was intercepted by the police at the Lethem checkpoint, where she was asked to present her passport. On checking, the police observed that she had travelled illegally. She was then arrested and taken to the CID headquarters, where she was further questioned.
After admitting to the charges, Ramirez was fined $40,000 with an alternative of serving four weeks in prison, after which she will be escorted to the nearest port of exit.
