Man dies in Liliendaal crash following birthday celebration

One person is dead and two others including the driver are said to be critical after the car they were in reportedly collided with a utility pole at Liliendaal on the Rupert Craig Highway this morning.

Dead is Isiah Corletta, 25, a resident of Lot 99 Castello Housing Scheme, Georgetown. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital.

Mikhail Punch, said to be the driver, and a female occupant whose name is unknown at this time are presently receiving treatment at the said hospital.

Traffic Chief Linden Isles this morning confirmed the accident which he said occurred around 2.20 am.

The police this afternoon issued the following release on the accident:

Police are investigating a fatal accident which occurred about 02:20hrs today on the Liliendaal Public Road, East Coast Demerara, involving motorcar PWW 676 driven by a 25-year-old resident of lot 33 Middle Street, Sparendaam, East Coast Demerara and occupants Isaiah Corlette, 25, of lot 99 Castello Housing Scheme, Georgetown (deceased) and a female whose identity and other particulars are presently unknown; both the driver and female who are said to be in a critical condition, are warded at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.

Enquiries disclosed that the vehicle was proceeding west along the southern carriageway of the road, when the driver reportedly lost control and collided with a utility pole.

 As a result of the impact, all of the occupants were reportedly flung onto the roadway and sustained injuries.

They were rushed to the GPHC where Corlette was pronounced dead on arrival whilst the others were treated and admitted in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

The occupants were said to be returning home, having left a popular night spot located on the Railway Embankment where the deceased was celebrating an anniversary.

According to Isles, information revealed that the trio was in motor car, PWW 676 driven by Punch and proceeding west along the southern lane of the public road when the driver reportedly lost control and they collided with the pole.

The occupants managed to get out of the mangled car and were transported to the hospital.

At the time of the accident, they were said to be heading to Georgetown following a hang at the Plaisance line top. Corletta celebrated his birthday yesterday.
