Skipper Leon Johnson, recorded a superb unbeaten century to guide a wounded Georgetown, who were hammered by Essequibo the day prior, to a 26-run win over Lower Corentyne in the final round of the 2018 edition of the Guyana Cricket Board One– day franchise league at the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC), yesterday.
The day also belonged to National Under–19 batman, Kevlon Anderson who crafted an eye-catching century in Lower Corentyne’s unsuccessful run chase.
As the script went, Georgetown batted first and posted 290 for four from their allotted 50 overs with Johnson, the cornerstone, stroking 111 in a knock which contained 11 fours and a maximum.
The innings, however, began with a wobble as Robin Bacchus (14) and Raymond Perez (5) were dismissed early on to leave the score on 35-2.
Johnson and Christopher Barnwell then combined for a 92-run partnership before the latter was dismissed for 43 after hitting five boundaries.
Dexter Soloman (16) hung around for a few overs but it was Johnson along with Omesh Danram who provided the impetus in the latter overs with an unbeaten knock of 59 inclusive of two fours and three maximums to leave Georgetown just short of 300.
Seamers Raun Johnson (1-65) and Nial Smith (1-49) along with spinner Kelvin Umroan (1-46) and Junior Sinclair (1-42) ended as the wicket-takers for their side.
Lower Corentyne in response, was dismissed for 264, off the first ball of the fiftieth over.
The chase got off to a less than ideal start after they were reduced to 79 – 4 before
Anderson and Sasenarine Sukhu featured in a threatening 105-run stand which ended when Sukhu fell three short of his fifty. Anderson during that period played a number of delightful shots before he was dismissed by Barnwell (2-43) for 116 after stroking nine fours and three sixes.
The rest of the lower order faltered with Keth Simson (19) putting up a brief resistance as his side was dismissed.
Seamer Qumar Torrington was the most successful bowler with 3-47.
