Kobras defeated Sonics in the 1st Division, while Plaisance Guardians bested Eagles in the U23 section, when the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association [GABA] ‘League Championship’ continued on Wednesday.
Kobras overcame Sonics 43-35. Carlos Edwards top scored for the victory in the cagey affair with 14 points, while Jermaine Slater contributed 11 points.
The duo of Garfield Greenfield and Trevor Smith added eight and five points apiece. For Sonics, Junior Lovell recorded 12 points, while Corwin Blades and Yannick December netted eight and five points each.
Leading 13-12 at the end of the first period, Kobras increased their marginal advance in the second stanza, netting 11 points, while restricting Sonics to five points, to enter the halftime interval ahead at 24-7.
However Sonics fought back in the pivotal third quarter, reducing the deficit, as they outscored Kobras 13-11 to head into the final period trailing 35-30.
Nonetheless, Kobras secured the deserved victory, outhustling their opponent 8-5 in a low scoring and physical period.
Meanwhile, Guardians brushed aside Eagles 70-53. Jared Sears and Terrence Daniels led the way with 15 points, while Andrew Johnson assisted with 13 points.
Chipping in with nine and seven points respectively were Nigel Bowen and Ronaldo Teixeira. For the loser, Shamar Huntley tallied a game high 16 points, with Sherland Gillis the next best scorer with 13 points.
Diquan Wray, Somesh Dhanram and Orson Smith supported with nine, six and five points correspondingly. The tournament continues tomorrow at the same venue with another doubleheader.
