A historic Courts 10k gets off to a flying start tomorrow morning at 6am.
According to President of the Athletic Association of Guyana (AAG), Aubrey Hutson, a record 200 plus entrants will compete in the eighth edition of the annual fixture.
Hutson also told Stabroek Sport yesterday that new state of the art timing equipment was recently sourced from the USA and will be inaugurated at the event.
The race which is now a fixture on the AAG’s calendar, sees some clubs, athletes and gyms participating every year with last year having the largest registration in history for any 10K event in Guyana. This year will trump that.
The event is opened to runners in the juniors, seniors and masters categories for both males and females. Courts will be investing in excess of $2M in the organization of this year’s event.
The 10K race will commence in front of Courts on Main Street and will follow the traditional prescribed route. The winners of the open male and female categories will pocket $100,000 each, while the immediate runners up will take home $80,000, $60,000, $40,000, $20,000 and $10,000 respectively.
A Golden mile for youths along with a 3K event will be held simultaneously for staff members of the company and the first to third place winners for both male and female staff members will be awarded with cash prizes and trophies.
A release from the company stated yesterday that Courts is proud to be able to continue to host this event and make good on its commitment to sports in Guyana.
Meanwhile, there is buzz around the road race community that Cleveland Thomas is the biggest threat to spring an upset of Cleveland Forde, perennial champion of the calendar road race. Will there be an upset or will Forde’s dominance continue? The answer will be known tomorrow. See you there.
