A West Ruimveldt father of two is the country’s latest road fatality following a collision between two vehicles at the intersection of Middle and Carmichael Streets, Georgetown early yesterday morning.
Dead is 26-year-old Jason Marques called ‘Suicide’ of Lot 85 West Ruimveldt, Georgetown. Two of his friends, Mark Jacobs, 17, of Lot 32 Campbellville and Timothy Fairbairn, 26, of Lot 212 Charlotte Street, Georgetown were injured. Fairbairn remains in a critical condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) while Jacobs was treated and sent away.
The drivers of both vehicles were drunk, the police said.
According to police reports, the accident occurred at approximately 1:50am yesterday. The police explained that motorcar PRR 4249, driven by a resident of Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice, was proceeding north along Carmichael Street when it collided with motor jeep PMM 52, which was proceeding east along Middle Street. It was reported that the driver of the car failed to stop at the intersection and, as a result, collided with the jeep.
Following the collision, the jeep toppled and the occupants, which included Marques and his injured friends, sustained injuries about their bodies. They were rushed to the hospital by public-spirited citizens. While they were receiving medical attention, Marques succumbed.
At his West Ruimveldt home yesterday, family members were still trying to come to grips with his death. His sister, Nicole, told this publication that they received word of the accident shortly after it occurred.
She said when the family got to the hospital, doctors were battling to save her youngest brother’s life but despite their efforts, they were unsuccessful. She noted that her brother had sustained injuries to his neck and spine.
The sister reported that from what the family were told, her brother and his friends had just left the Palm Court night spot on Main Street and were heading to another popular night spot in Alberttown, when the accident occurred.
Marques is survived by his parents, five siblings and two daughters.
Police said a breathalyzer test was conducted on both drivers – who escaped unhurt – and they were found to be above the prescribed limit. Both drivers, whose names were not released, are in police custody assisting in the investigation.
