Police constable Ryan Persaud was yesterday charged with causing the death of Akemo Anthony, the motorcyclist he collided with on Mandela Avenue, in Georgetown, one month prior.
Persaud, 23, who was previously charged with driving under the influence at the time of the accident, was released on $250,000 bail and his next hearing was fixed for October 12th.
It is alleged that on September 1st, at Mandela Avenue, Persaud drove motor vehicle PVV 4652 in a manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death of Anthony.
Persaud was previously granted his release on $25,000 bail by Magistrate Marissa Mittelholzer after being charged with driving while his breath alcohol level exceeded the legal limit.
Persaud was driving a police force minibus when he collided with Anthony. A statement from the police force said the constable was proceeding east along the northern carriageway on Mandela Avenue, while Anthony, 23, was proceeding in the opposite direction on motorcycle CJ 511. Anthony suddenly turned north into the path of the minibus in an attempt to cross into Back Circle Street. However, because of the short distance, the bus collided with the motorcycle, police added.
Witnesses had claimed the lawman was speeding at the time of the accident.
