A welder was yesterday remanded to prison after he was charged with attempting to murder dog food vendor Shane Cooper, who was shot twice in an attack last week.
Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman read the charge to Naresh Samaroo, 21, of 97 James Street, Albouystown, who appeared before her in Georgetown.
It was alleged that on September 24th, 2015, at Stevedore Street, North Ruimveldt, Samaroo caused grievous bodily harm to Cooper, with intent to murder him.
He was not required to offer a plea to the indictable charge.
According to facts presented by the prosecution, on the day in question, at about 9.15 pm, the complainant was working when three men walked up to him and demanded that he handed over his jewellery. The prosecutor noted that the defendant, in a bid to escape the men, ran and was subsequently shot to his legs and back. He was later admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
The court heard that Samaroo, who was placed on an identification parade after his arrest, was positively identified by the complainant as one of the men who tried to rob him.
As a result, bail was objected to by the prosecutor, despite an application by Samaroo’s attorney, Latchmie Rahamat.
The defendant was later remanded to prison until October 17th, when he is expected to appear before the Chief Magistrate.
