Seasoned campaigners Nyron Joseph and Abosaide Cadogan began their campaign in the 2018 edition of the Lucozade handicap squash tournament with contrasting wins at the Georgetown Club last evening.
Joseph, in an exciting open encounter, was made to work in order to pull off a marathon effort to defeat Robert Natiello, 2-1, in a strong showing after he began each set with a minus 22 handicap against Natiello’s plus eight.
The game began with Natiello stealing the first set 15-4, which saw a strong response from Joseph who threw himself around to collect the next two sets and the match 15-9, 15-10.
Cadogan, on the other hand, who began the handicap at minus four, only dropped two points in her match against Teija Edwards who had a plus 11 advantage, to win 15-12, 15-12 to start her campaign smoothly.
The first match of the evening saw Nicholas Verwey going past Madison Fernandes 15-6, 15-10 while Sarah Lewis downed Kamir Khan 15-13, 15-14.
Kirstin Gomes, another strong contender for the category A title, in her opening match of the tournament, defeated Dhiren Gomes 15-11, 15-12.
Steven Xavier was also in the winners’ row after he defeated Bryan Young 15-14, 15-11 in their opening encounter.
These were the results as of press time. The competition will shift gears this evening with the commencement of the quarterfinals matches.
