West Indies Under-19 left-arm spinner Ashmead Nedd yesterday produced a Man-of-the-Match performance with both bat and ball to spur Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) to a 49-run win over-arch rivals Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) in the final of the sixth New Building Society/ Georgetown Cricket Association 40-overs second-division tournament at their Queenstown club ground.
DCC lost the toss and were sent in to bat, posting 183 all out in 38.1 overs. They then restricted GCC to 134 all out in 36.3 overs.
DCC got of a horrid start with Steven Sankar failing to score. But Sachin Singh made the most of being dropped twice, once at slip and once at point to top score with 39 from 45 balls with two sixes and three fours.
Raymond Perez chipped in with 34 from 42 balls but DCC plunged from 5-100 to 9-143 before Nedd, with a composed 29 and Garrick Persaud, batting at number 11 contributed 25 not out with two sixes, one of which was off of a free hit that went onto the road.
Spinners, Gavin Singh (3-42) and Chetram Persaud (3-34) were the main wicket takers while Ronaldo Ali-Mohammed took 2-34.
the three-time champions began their reply by promoting Joshua Wade to the top of the order but the experiment backfired as he was bowled by Dennis Squires.
GCC never recovered apart from a 47-run partnership between Deonarine Seegobin and Singh. However, that was broken with Singh attempting to sweep a delivery from Nedd only to be trapped leg before wicket for 22.
Seegobin carried on but Nedd would remove the big scalp of Ali-Mohammed who was dropped twice in two balls but held out to long off.
Seegobin carried on to finish unbeaten on 53 while Nedd ended with 4-22.
