Nyron Joseph brought down the curtain in the final of the Lucozade Handicap Squash Tournament with another clinical display to capture championship honours in the Open category at the Georgetown Club Squash Court, yesterday.
Joseph, who is the defending champion, began the handicap at a minus 14 and fashioned his win over Deje Dias on the back of his superior endurance to take the title in straight sets.
Joseph toyed with Dias and wore him down in both sets to take the match 15-14, 15-10.
Joshua Abdool took the Open plate final by defeating Ian Mekdeci 15-3, 15-9.
The other major championship winner of the day was Nicholas Verwey, who won an entertaining scrap against Kirsten Gomes 2-1 to take the category ‘A’ title.
Verwey moved smoothly around the court and played a few cheeky shots to come back from a 7-10 deficit to tie the first set at 10, 11, and 13 before taking the set 15-13.
Gomes came out strongly in the second game and for the most part held a slim lead.
Verway, however, never allowed her to slip too far away but Gomes held her own to edge him out to win the second 15-11 and tie the match at one game apiece.
The third and deciding set, though, went to Verwey, who won it 15-12 to secure his title.
Meanwhile, Abosaide Cadogan (-4) came out on top in the category ‘A’ third-place match by working her way past Mohryan Baksh (+2) in straight games, defeating him 15-11, 15-6.
Zackary Persaud copped the category ‘A’ plate final by downing Kamir Khan 15-7, 15-14 while Louis Da Silva captured the category ‘A’ plate third-place match by defeating Dhiren Persaud (+5) 15-8, 15-5.
Steven Xavier won the third place in the open category by virtue of a walkover from Regan Pollard.
