Andrew Glasgow, the 24-year-old motorcyclist who allegedly struck down and killed pedestrian Orin Roberts on Sunday afternoon at the junction of Princes and John streets, Georgetown, remains in a critical state.
Stabroek News understands that Glasgow, a resident of Lot 49 Recht door Zee, West Bank Demerara, who sustained severe injuries during the accident, which occurred around 5.30 pm on Sunday, is currently a patient of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he remains unconscious.
The accident led to the death of Roberts, 60, a resident of Lot 23 John and Norton streets, Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown.
Roberts, who sustained head injuries and a broken left leg, was taken to the hospital in a semi-conscious state. He succumbed around 10 pm while receiving medical attention.
His niece, Marissa Primo, on Wednesday informed this newspaper that an autopsy done that day revealed that Roberts died as a result of multiple injuries. Primo said her uncle sustained injuries to his head, spine and legs.
A police source had previously related to Stabroek News that investigations had indicated that Roberts was standing on the northern side of Princes Street, waiting to cross the road, when Glasgow, who was approaching, reportedly lost control as he neared John Street. As a result, he reportedly collided with Roberts.
Primo had explained to this newspaper that at the time of the accident, Roberts was heading to Adelaide Street to visit some friends. He walked with the aid of a stick and had hearing issues, she had said.
According to Primo, Glasgow was part of a convoy of bikes that were in a funeral procession. “Apparently they had a funeral going on…and the whole crew was coming from upper Princes Street…,” she had said.
The woman, who is a dance instructor, had added that she and her students were on a break nearby when they heard the loud impact of the collision.
As a result, Primo said they proceeded to the scene to find out what had happened. “When we got there, we see the crowd and so forth and then I make my way through and I saw my uncle (Roberts) on the floor. When I look up ahead, I saw the other young man (Glasgow) also” Primo had recalled.
His motorcycle wasn’t too far away from him,” she recalled.
