For the past seven years when the calendar flips to October, Digicel stages its annual Cancer Awareness cycling event.
This year will be no different.
During the launch of the flagship event yesterday at the Georgetown Cricket Club pavilion, it was disclosed that this year’s fixture will be staged on October 21.
The cream of the nation’s wheelsmen along with casual riders will battle for lucrative cash prizes and trophies when the activities get underway at 08:30h.
According to Keith Fernandes, President of the Evolution Cycle Club, the event promises to be “different” and “exciting.”
The main event, which is set to feature the best senior and junior riders from across the 592, will start on Irving Street, head north to the roundabout, turn right onto Vlissengen Road, left onto Thomas Lands then back onto Irving Street for 30 laps (approximately 40 miles).
The Novices/Mountain Bikes will compete in race one, followed by a race for children (being held for the first time at the event), a match sprint and the race for veterans (Over and Under 45 years).
Vidya Sanichara of Digicel pointed out while there is no registration fee for the children, others would be required to pay $2,000 to compete. The proceeds from registration would be matched by Digicel and donated to the Cancer Institute of Guyana. Sanichara added that part of the proceeds from the company’s smartphone sales in October would also be given to the Cancer Institute to aid its fight against the disease.
Meanwhile, this year Banks DIH Limited will be rehydrating athletes and officials through its Rainforest Waters. The stakeholders are urging members of the public to come out and witness the country’s riders as they compete for a good cause.
Registration will start at 07:00h on race day.
