Bernard Bailey was in red-hot form with both bat and ball as he guided Eccles to a 42-run win over Rome Athletics when the East Bank Cricket Association/Neville Sarjoo Memorial 40 overs tournament continued Saturday at the Young Men’s Christian Association Ground, Thomas Lands.
Batting first, Eccles crawled to 129 all out in 24.2 overs before dismissing Rome for 87 in 32 overs.
Eccles were rocked early with Akeem Redman getting Sachin Singh to nick to the wicketkeeper in the first over.
After the loss of both openers for scores of 0 and 2 Alphius Bookie and Mark Ramsammy consolidated well with cameos of 25 and 12. Bookie’s knock came from just 27 balls and included four fours.
The foundation laid, Bailey came in to blast 64 from 31 balls with four fours and five sixes before falling to Shaquille Moseley, caught at long on by Chemroy Kendall. Moseley ended with 4-30 while Redman and Kevin Ross supported with two wickets each for 24 and 27 runs respectively.
In reply, Rome’s innings got off to a similarly poor start with the top order being blown away by Bailey. It was the middle order pair of Sheldon Chapman (21) and David Webb (24) who looked to get the job done. But Bailey returned with the ball to cripple the lower order, picking up 4-34 while Singh took 2-19.
Redman remaining unbeaten on 22 after hitting two fours and one six.
