Durn Hunt, the Corriverton man who police say threw his girlfriend into a drain and then stabbed her on Monday, was formally charged with her murder yesterday.
Hunt, also known as ‘Rasta,’ 34, of Lot 108 Crane Street, Queenstown, appeared at the Number 51 Magistrate’s Court, where he was charged with the murder of Itashia Frank. It is alleged that he murdered Frank in Corriverton on Monday, October 15th.
The unrepresented man was not required to enter a plea to the charge when he appeared before Magistrate Charlyn Artiga yesterday. He was remanded to prison and the matter was transferred to the Springlands Magistrate’s Court for a hearing on October 26th, when it is expected that attorney Mursaline Bacchus will appear on behalf of the accused.
A post-mortem examination that was done on Frank’s body on Thursday revealed that she died from drowning compounded by stab wounds.
Stabroek News confirmed that the woman sustained three stabs to her neck as she attempted to fight her way out of the man’s reach. Hunt met Frank, 38, of Georgetown, three weeks prior to the murder.
Residents had said the couple had an argument sometime around 9 am on Monday, during which Hunt reportedly armed himself with a knife. Frank immediately fled the yard but the man ran after her. This publication was told that the man caught up with her at the head of Crane Street, where he threw her into a nearby drain and stabbed her to death.
Residents, who said they were scared to rush to her assistance, later noted that they urged the man to pick Frank up but he reportedly told them that he was too weak to do so. The woman’s body was submerged in water and mud until the police arrived at the scene.
The residents said that the woman was alive for some time. However, Frank was pronounced dead on arrival at the Skeldon Public Hospital, where she was rushed by the police.Hunt was arrested sitting on the street above the drain while the murder weapon was retrieved from the drain after the woman’s body was removed.
