St. Stanislaus College A Team emerged champions at last weekend’s Marian Academy Scholastic Chess Club competition held at the school’s auditorium, a release from the organisers stated.
According to the release, St. Stanislaus College Team A, comprising top juniors Jaden Taylor, Ghansham Allijohn, Jarrell Troyer and young female sensation Chelsea Juma, was the only team to play undefeated while their B Team, with players such as Kristoff Persaud, Savir Gokul, John Wong and Hitesh Deonarine finished fourth.
Even though the Brickdam-based school won the competition, the team of the tournament was Queen’s College’s A Team consisting of Natesh Baijor, Rajiv Lee, Jamal Thomas and Diego Barrnet.
Led by rising star Rajiv Lee, the team played very well to take second place.
Lee, who finished on five points, performed well especially against the eventual, champions while the Queen’s College B Team finished fifth.
Ethan Lee led Marian Academy Team A to third place while Odit Rodriguez surprisingly stepped up with some astonishing games in the first three rounds.
Marian Academy Team B saw Roshawn Washington playing undefeated to gain five and one half points from his six games.
The young and inexperienced School of the Nations team fought hard among the experienced opponents with good games coming from Joshua Khan and Shabaka Martin.
In the Primary Schools Category it was all glory for Marian Academy. However, Tuschen Deaf Academy players Aleem Basser and Anaya Lall made sure their teams were in the limelight with some fighting victories over much higher rated players.
Mae’s School – Primary Team was led by young Arysh Raghunauth and the Alli Brother’s Jibril and Kaiden. They finished in fourth place.
The Individual Section for primary and secondary was won by hosts, Marian Academy with Ronan Lee winning the secondary section.
Notable games came from Jacob Mc Donald of School of the Nations and Omar Shariff of Mae’s School in the Primary section.
This event was hosted by Marian Academy with full support from the Wendell Meusa Chess Foundation. Special thanks to all the Head Teachers of Mae’s School, School of the Nations, Al Ghazali Islamic Academy, Tuschen Deaf Academy, Queen’s College, St Stanislaus College and Bishops’ High School.
