The fifth annual Smalta Girls Pee Wee Primary Schools Football Championships was officially launched yesterday at the National Library.
The event, which will be played initially in a round-robin format, commences November 17th at the Ministry of Education ground, Carifesta Avenue with 16 teams divided into four groups of four.
The grand finale is set for December 18th. South Ruimveldt are the defending champions.
Troy Mendonca, Co-Director of tournament coordinator, the Petra Organization, said that he has seen the programme grow from strength to strength each year.
He added, “This programme provides the foundation for these girls here to develop, it provides an opportunity for you to interact, socialize and realize your skill through new experiences. Essentially this continued sponsorship caters for a very integral part of development and enhancement of women’s football in Guyana”.
Also, Bryan Joseph, Guyana Football Federation [GFF] Youth Development Officer praised Ansa McAl for its commitment to Women’s Football, following their sponsorship of the Senior Women’s League several days earlier. Ansa McAl representative Gabrielle Lopes, in brief remarks said, “Football provides the foundation for these little girls to develop their game and it also provides the opportunit
y for them to socialise and interact we each. Football teaches discipline and how to be a team leader as well. I’m pleased to see the emphasis placed on our girls because it will give them the confidence which will help them in achieving their goals.”
Winner of the event will pocket $200,000 towards a school project and a trophy, while the second, third and fourth place finisher collects $100,000, $75,000 and $50,000 respectively towards a school initiative.
