A security guard is currently in police custody after he fatally shot a young man, who allegedly attacked him with a knife at a Vergenoegen, East Bank Essequibo (EBE) poultry farm in the wee hours of yesterday morning.
Dead is Jarrel Noble, called ‘Dumb Boy,’ 22, a resident of Tuschen, EBE, who it is claimed attacked the guard with a knife.
Police spokesman Jairam Ramlakhan confirmed the fatal shooting, which took place shortly after 4.30 am.
Noble, who was shot twice, was rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where he was initially treated before being transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH).
He succumbed to his injuries at the GPH around 10 am.
Ramlakhan said the security guard was taken into custody and is assisting with the investigation. The licensed shotgun with which he shot Noble was also lodged.
Ramlakhan explained that the security guard is attached to a service station in Vergenoegen. He is also responsible for looking over the poultry farm where the fatal shooting occurred.
This newspaper was told that the security guard was on duty when someone informed him that they noticed Noble in the farmyard.
As a result, the guard and the poultry farmer, who earlier observed the intruder on the premises via CCTV cameras, went to the poultry farm. During a check by the men of a building on the premises, Noble, who was armed with a knife, reportedly emerged from a room and attacked the guard. The guard then allegedly discharged two rounds, which hit Noble.
Police said Noble is known to them as he was previously charged with break and enter and larceny.
