It was a night of upsets Friday as Georgetown heavyweights Sparta Boss, Back Circle and Bent Street were dumped out of the inaugural ‘Bragging Rights’ Beach Football Championship following opening night losses.
Witnessed by a small crowd at the Marriott Beach Front, the aforementioned foursome suffered two consecutive defeats.
In an evening highlighted by several penalty shoot-out victories, Sparta lost their opening match to Future Stars 1-0 via the penalty mark, following a scoreless regulation time draw.
The East La Penitence-based outfit then went down to Swag Entertainment 3-2 on penalty kicks after a normal-time scoreless draw.
Similarly, Back Circle lost to Silver Stars 1-0 via the penalty spot, after normal time finished 1-1, before going gown to the impressive Buxton Diamond 1-0 on penalty kicks, following another scoreless clash.
Meanwhile, Bent Street suffered a defeat at the hands of Hard-ball 1-0 in their opening matchup. In their second match, Bent Street lost to Ol Skool Ballers 1-0 on penalty kicks, after both teams failed to score in regulation time.
Up to press time the remaining matches in the group stage and the quarterfinal round were underway. The semi-finals and final will be held today at the same venue.
Winner of the event will pocket $300,000 and the championship trophy, while the runner-up, third and fourth place finishers will receive $100,000, $60,000 and $40,000 correspondingly.
