Two armed bandits on Friday evening pounced on a Number 65 Village, Corentyne cattle farmer and robbed him of a large quantity of cash, jewellery, a shotgun and live cartridges.
During the attack, the bandits assaulted the man, Thirbenny Ramnauth, 66, and his wife, Chandrawattie Ramnauth, 62, at their Section B, Number 65 Village home.
In the attack, which occurred around 6.30 pm on Friday, the bandits relieved the couple of $300,000, US$2,575, a large quantity of jewellery, an iPhone valued $100,000, two Samsung cellphones valued $40,000, three bottles of whisky, valued $30,000, a 12-gauge shotgun and 25 live 12-gauge cartridges.
According to information gathered, the Ramnauths were home when the two bandits, who were masked and both armed with guns, invaded their premises.
Sunday Stabroek was told that Thirbenny was sitting on the front verandah, located in the lower flat of his two-story concrete house, when the two men jumped over his fence.
The men reportedly ordered him to be quiet and he let them into the house, where they began demanding cash and jewellery. However, a scuffle ensued when the farmer pulled the rag from one of the bandit’s faces, leading his attackers to batter him about the body with their guns.
They then tied the farmer and his wife’s hands behind their backs, and one of the bandits led Chandrawattie to the upper flat of the house, while another stood guard over the farmer downstairs.
It was reported that after returning downstairs with the farmer’s wife, the bandit cocked his gun and placed it into her mouth, while threatening to kill her. He and his accomplice afterwards made good their escape.
Thirbenny was rushed to the Skeldon Public Hospi-tal, where he was admitted in a stable condition. How-ever, this newspaper has since been told that the man checked into a private hospital in Georgetown.
A cellphone with a memory card was discovered in an open field located through the area where the bandits escaped. A police source yesterday said that the phone is suspected to belong to one of the perpetrators and that they were questioning persons linked to it as an active investigation is ongoing.
