Exactly one week after capturing the Prime Minister’s Cup title, Regal Masters last evening cemented their dynasty by collecting another purse, winning the over 45 category of the 2018 edition of the Guyana Floodlights Softball Cricket Association (GFSCA) International Softball Cup.
Regal collected the top purse of eight hundred thousand dollars after defeating Fishermen Masters by 60 runs at the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC).
Regal, after being sent in, rocketed to 218 for four at the end of their 20 overs. A crafty innings of 72 from skipper Mohaindra Arjune spearheaded his side’s commanding score. He received support from Eon Abel (39) and Mahase Chunilall (47).
Pooran Singh (2-47) and Lalbahadur Persaud (2-37) were the chief wicket-takers for the Fishermen who were limited to 158 for five when their overs ended despite an even 50 from Fazal Ally. The wickets were evenly shared for the eventual champions Regal.
Meanwhile, Parika Defenders won the Masters over 50 title by defeating Floodlights XI by 28 runs in the first final of the day.
Defenders, after taking the first hit, blasted 214 for four from their 20 overs. A brutal innings of 73 from Rashid Mohamed was the spearhead while Sadiq Mohammed (53) and Oswald Chandler (45) chipped in with handy knocks.
Floodlights, in response, were limited to 187 for six in their attempt.
A ladies exhibition match saw Demerara defeating Berbice by 88 runs.
Demerara batting first made 203 for four on the back of fine century (103) from Latoya Smith while opener Cherry-Ann Fraser supported with an innings of 68. Berbice in response were bundled out for 115.
The hotly contested Open final between Ariel Speedboat and SVC Cricket Club was not completed as of press time. See tomorrow’s edition for a report on that match.
