Dear Editor,
With Local Government Elections just around the corner, political parties are making their last pitch to win the votes.
If public and community meetings are anything to go by, it looks like the PPP will again sweep the polls. The manipulation of boundaries at the NDC level and the creation of new Local Government Areas in perceived APNU strongholds could give that party an electoral advantage in these areas but it is unlikely to prevent the PPP from winning an overwhelming number of NDCs as in the previous election.
The fate of the AFC hangs in the balance. If it fails to pick up a significant amount of seats, as seems likely, it could weaken its bargaining strength in the APNU+AFC coalition.
I wish to take this opportunity to call on all eligible Guyanese to exercise your right to vote on November 12. Local Government democracy is an integral part of the governance process. It provides an opportunity for people at the grassroots level to get involved in the management of their own affairs at the community level.
Yours faithfully,
Hydar Ally
